1 in 5 Australian Parents Taking Risky Late-Term Babymoons

February 1, 2018

New research reveals one in five soon to be parents go on holiday in their third trimester. Finder.com.au has tips for a stress-free final break before baby arrives.

Babymoon - Pregnant Belly - Sunset

One in five parents is jumping on the ‘babymoon’ trend squeezing in one last holiday before their new family member arrives, according to new research from finder.com.au, the site that compares virtually everything. However, finder.com.au analysis of airline restrictions and travel insurance cut-off dates shows couples could be caught out by the fine print if they choose to travel in the third trimester.

According to the finder.com.au survey of 2,000 parents, more than one in five (21%) Aussie couples want to squeeze in a last-minute holiday before their new arrival, choosing to travel past the 28-week mark.

While the majority (16%) of babymooners travel within Australia, 5% risk jet-setting internationally close to their due date.

Bessie Hassan, Travel Insurance Expert at finder.com.au warns soon-to-be mums planning on hopping on a plane to check with their airline before booking a flight.

“Most airlines will require you to present a medical certificate stating you’re fit to travel after 28 weeks, regardless of the length of the flight. When travelling overseas, most airlines won’t let you fly after 36 weeks.

“Travel insurers also have cut-off dates for cover as early as 18 weeks, and some require you to take out a specific pregnancy policy, so it pays to read the fine print.

“Depending on the destination, overseas medical attention can be extremely expensive so it may be safer to stick to Australian shores,” says Ms Hassan.

Babymoon - Pregnant Belly - Meditation

finder.com.au stress-free babymoon checklist:

  1. Check with your medical practitioner that it’s safe for you to travel before booking flights. If you’ve been given the all-clear, request a medical certificate stating you’re fit to fly before heading to the airport.
  2. If you are planning on jumping on a plane interstate or overseas, look up the airline cut-off dates and restrictions for flying while pregnant before you book. This cut-off date can change depending on the flight duration if you have had complications, are having more than one baby (twins, triplets), or if your child was conceived via IVF.
  3. Purchase a travel insurance policy that will cover pregnancy-related issues overseas. Many insurers will cover up to 32 weeks but some cut-off at 18 weeks, so it pays to compare policy options.
  4. Consider buying flexible flights or accommodation that you can cancel 24 hours before the booking. That way you have more flexibility if you need to cancel the trip.

Penha Longa Resort in Fairytale Sintra, by Lotte van Ginkel

After months of lots of work, I was really looking forward to a trip. My wishlist:

  1. Me time;
  2. Relaxation;
  3. Nature;
  4. Culture;
  5. A little bit of adventure;
  6. Peace.

I started searching the internet and after a while, I found a perfect getaway destination: Sintra. Sintra offered everything I wanted and (a big plus) it was close to Lissabon.

Then I needed a place to stay. This was easily found. Because just outside Sintra you have this beautiful and luxurious resort, named Penha Longa Resort. So I booked it and the countdown to my trip started.

Finally, it was September! I hopped on an aeroplane and first explored Lissabon. What a pleasure to stay in this city. The September sun, nice walks, beautiful city views, awesome places to stay and some nice boutiques. I was happy. The next day I rented a car and drove towards the coast, heading for Penha Longa Resort in Sintra.

THE ARRIVAL AND STAY AT PENHA LONGA RESORT

The drive to Penha Longa Resort was easy and comfortable. At one point the signs of Penha Longa Resort are welcoming you. You drive through a green area and then you arrive. There is this most friendly guard you will ever meet and from that moment on he will recognize you and greets you every time with your name. After you enter the gates you immediately feel calm and happy. It’s green, peaceful and the landscape is amazing. After parking the car the staff welcomes you with tea and a towel. The room is ready and your me-time starts right away!

I stayed two nights at Penha Longa and felt totally relaxed. The room provides everything you need, the staff is impeccable, breakfast is amazing and even though I was on my own I never felt alone. It felt like home. And Sintra… well, that was an absolute blast.

SINTRA

One of the most beautiful areas I have ever been to. It’s enchanting, funny, beautiful and it makes you curious. My favourite spots are Palacio de Monserrate, Palacio Nacional da Pena and Quinta de Regaleira (especially for kids).

All of the above wishes were taken into account. I had this most wonderful stay and will definitely return.

Almost 25% of Australian Young Mums take a Babymoon

January 16, 2018

We are excited to share with you the latest about Australian mums and their desire to go on a Babymoon. Check out the Finder.com.au Survey over 2,000 parents with children under 12.

Babymoon in the Algarve - Australian Mums

According to new research by finder.com.au

  • One in five parents is squeezing in one last holiday as a couple before their baby arrives.
  • The survey of over 2,000 parents with children under 12, shows 22% of couples are enjoying one last getaway in the third trimester (over 28 weeks).
  • Most travel insurance policies and airlines cut off at the 32-week mark as it’s considered quite dangerous flying this far along.

We’ve also found it interesting to learn that younger mothers are more likely to make the trip, with almost a quarter (24%) of mums under 30 enjoying a getaway while pregnant, compared to 16% of those aged over 40.

And most Australian mums prefer to stay closer to home that late in the pregnancy, and are about three times as likely to travel domestically rather than internationally. Still, 5% of Australian parents are heading overseas, even while mum is heavily pregnant.

Travel Bans for pregnant mums

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia all have travel bans for pregnant women after 36 weeks, or only 32 weeks if you’re carrying twins. And even then, all those airlines will still require a doctor’s note for travel after 28 weeks.
